SAUFLEY’S SCOUTING BATTALION

Co. E (Tevis’ Arizona Scouts)

Saufley’s Scouting Battalion, Major’s Texas Cavalry Brigade, was a temporary field organization formed about February 1864, of men detailed from Baylor’s, Chisolm’s, Crump’s, and Madison’s Regiments Texas Cavalry. [ed. Co. E was organized of the Arizona Scouts.]

Organized the month of February 1864 with 6 companies A-F

A = Co. F, Madison’s Regt.

B = Co. K, Crumps Regt.

C = Mixed Co. H & Co. F Crump’s Regt.

D = (See Co F, 2^nd Texas Partisan Ranger

E = (Listed as unidentified but I know this to be the Arizona Scouts)

·         Wm. C. Benton – Lt. Ariz. Guards v R m R [?], Appears on a register of General Hospital El Paso, Texas, for the month of July 1862. Diagnose vulnus Sclop Feaver. When admitted July 9, 1862. When discharged: July 13, 1862. [ed. This card is apparently from when Benton was still listed in the Arizona Rangers [ed. not Arizona Guards.] The Arizona Rangers served in Arizona Terr. Attached to Pyron’s Battalion, 2^nd Texas Mounted Rifles during the New Mexico Campaign.

·         W. C. Benton 2^nd Lieut., Arizona Scouts. Residence - Arizona. Appears on a Roll of Prisoners of War, officers and men of the Confederate States Army. Roll dated – Not Dated. Paroled at San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 20, 1865.

Appears on a Roll of officers and men of the Confederate States Army, prisoners of war, paroled Sept. 13, 1865* Roll dated – Not dated. *From an examination of the individual paroles of some of the officers whose names are borne on this roll it is believed that all of the men were paroled at San Antonio, Texas-R. & P. 713357.
